Application to Join

Please consider water supply early in the planning process if you are building.

First you should read the conditions for membership below. If you have questions you can phone the manager for an informal discussion. It may be necessary for the manager to meet you at your site to assess the feasability of a connection. When ready to proceed, fill in and sign the application form and send it to us with your payment. You can pay by cheque or lodge it to our account.

Your application will be up for approval at the next committee meeting. The decision will be communicated to you in writing shortly afterwards. If your application is refused, the fee will be refunded in full. If your application is accepted, you will become a member and shareholder in the scheme and will be bound by its rules and regulations. Your acceptance letter can be used as evidence of water provision when applying for planning permission.

Contact the manager three weeks before you need to connect so that he can schedule the work.

Within five years from the date of approval you can cancel your membership for any reason (e.g. planning permission is denied), and receive a full refund, provided no connection has been made. You are not entitled to a refund after five years.

Conditions for Connecting to Gallagh GWS

  1. The joining fee is €1300*, payable in full at the time of application. This includes ongoing membership of the scheme, one ordinary transferable share in the co-operative, and the installation, maintenance and annual reading of one water meter.
  2. Membership can be in joint names but each membership has one share and one vote only.
  3. Your connection point must be on the existing mains or across the road from the mains. From 1st July 2022 onwards a road crossing is included as part of the installation.
  4. Only one house may be supplied per membership but additional connections for land may be requested at any time at a cost of €800*.
  5. Installation of all piping from the connection point to your point(s) of use is your responsibility.
  6. Once your meter is installed you will be charged for all the water that passes through it and will be responsible for any leakage that happens after it. The current rate is €0.80/m3 with an annual free allowance of 160 m3 for domestic customers**. Invoices are sent out in September and are to be paid by the end of October.
  7. By signing the application form you agree to abide by our rules and regulations, available here (operating rules on pages 25 and 26). Your rights and responsibilities as a member can be seen here.

Purchasing a house and/or land with an existing connection

  1. If a purchaser is taking over all the seller's meters then the seller no longer needs the membership and it can be transferred to the purchaser at no cost. The seller ceases to be a member. The purchaser completes and signs the membership form, thereby agreeing to abide by the rules. The contact details on the account are updated to those of the purchaser.
  2. If the seller is retaining his/her membership (e.g. sells a plot of land that has a water meter but still has other meters in his account) and the purchaser is not already a member, then the purchaser must apply for membership by filling in the form and paying a reduced fee of €1000.  If the purchaser is already a member then there is no charge and the meter is transferred from the seller's account to the purchaser's account.

*The prices increased from €1000 to €1300 and from €500 to €800on 1st July 2022 to accommodate the inclusion of road crossings when needed.
** Rates and allowances are subject to change in accordance with inflation and county council funding policy.
